When and why 4CSB started
The Community Radio of Wondai has been incorporated since 1995.
After the commercial radio station decided to relocate to Toowoomba some years ago, CrowFM 90.7 was inundated with requests from the community at large to provide a local radio service.
CrowFM 90.7 has gone from strength to strength, and has continued to grow and provide an avenue for participation by the community in the activities of the station.

What it means to be a "Community Radio Station"
Being a community radio station means operating as a not-for-profit, locally focused broadcaster that serves the interests of a specific community. It differs from commercial and public radio in several key ways:
Core Principles of Community Radio
- Local Focus – Community radio prioritizes local content, music, stories, and issues relevant to its audience. Stations like Crow FM provide a platform for the community’s voice, supporting regional news, events, and local talent.
- Volunteer & Community Involvement – Many community stations rely on volunteers, from presenters to production teams, creating an inclusive space where people can contribute to radio.
- Not-for-Profit – Community radio typically operates as a not-for-profit entity, meaning revenue (from sponsorship, grants, and fundraising) is reinvested into station operations rather than generating profits for owners or shareholders.
- Diverse & Alternative Content – Unlike mainstream commercial radio, community stations cater to niche interests, underrepresented voices, and music genres beyond the Top 40 charts.
- Educational & Developmental Role – Community radio often provides media training, mentoring, and broadcasting opportunities for locals, including youth, Indigenous communities, and minority groups.
- Independent & Grassroots – Decisions are made at a local level rather than being dictated by corporate or government agendas, ensuring authenticity and genuine community representation.
Community Radio in Australia
In Australia, community radio is a key part of the media landscape, regulated by the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) and the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). These stations serve different groups, including ethnic communities, First Nations Australians, religious organizations, and rural/remote areas.
Stations like Crow FM 90.7 play a vital role by delivering the Burnett’s Best Music Mix, engaging with listeners through local news, competitions, and interactive segments, and supporting regional businesses through sponsorship.
